SAW: Genesis Hands-On Preview: Three Accused, One Judge in a 3v1 Horror Experience

SAW: Genesis, a 3v1 horror from Broken Mirror Games and Anshar Studios, pits three Accused against one Judge in a prequel-era Saw experience. Published by Bloober Team NA, the game is set in a bleak era that follows World War I, roughly a century before the films. At Gamescom 2026, we played two matches and got an early sense of its asymmetric multiplayer setup.

The central premise is simple: three Accused strive to break free as the Judge works to foil their escape. A match unfolds in stages where players explore, locate key items, and complete challenges before time runs out. Early on, players must find three items across the map and bring them to a designated location to unlock the next area. Sacrifices — such as giving blood or enduring pain — extend the clock and introduce additional threats to the trial.

Procedurally Generated Trials

The game uses procedurally generated maps, meaning room layouts, routes, items, and challenges can vary between matches. In our hands-on, an environment labeled The Orphanage showed how objects can appear in different places from game to game, encouraging fresh exploration rather than memorization.

The Judge, Accomplice and Rehabilitation Traps

The Judge is not just a pursuer; the role is designed to control the trial. Observing players, deploying traps and tools, and moving through hidden corridors are all part of the performance, with direct confrontations possible but not an unstoppable sweep. Accused players can fight back with improvised weapons found in the environment. The Judge can also summon an Accomplice to press the three. If a player is dragged to a Rehabilitation Trap, teammates must decide whether to rescue or allow the participant to sacrifice part of their body to escape. Injuries carry lasting consequences for combat, puzzles and movement.

Proximity Voice and Steam Early Access Plans

Proximity voice communication is a potential feature, allowing nearby teammates—and the Judge—to hear conversations, creating risk-reward dynamics during time-crunched escapes. The game currently has no confirmed release date and is planned for Early Access on PC via Steam.
