Entertainment Weekly unveiled several new looks at Rob Savage’s Other Mommy, an adaptation of Josh Malerman’s Incidents Around the House. Savage says the film contains about 50 jump scares, stating, ‘Oh, like 50,’ and adds that jump scares can work without the traditional quiet…quiet…LOUD formula.
Tone and opening sequence
The director describes Other Mommy as a film that blends multiple horror elements, balancing dread with large set pieces and a sense of paranoia that makes Bela—and the audience—wonder whether the figure before them is her mother, Ursula, or a threatening figure known as the Other Mommy.
The opening sequence features Bela’s parents tucking her in, turning off the light, and leaving after she says goodnight. In the dark, Bela murmurs a farewell to the Other Mommy.
Cast, production and adaptation
Other Mommy stars Jessica Chastain, Jay Duplass, Arabella Olivia Clark, and Dichen Lachman, with James Wan serving as a producer, collaborating with Blumhouse and Atomic Monster. It is an adaptation of Malerman’s Incidents Around the House.
Rating and release timing
The film carries an R rating for violent content and language, and is slated to open in theaters on October 9.
